In the spirit of spreading comfort and cheer, we've embarked on a heartwarming journey to create something special for these preemie superheroes. Our crocheted pumpkin hats, crafted with love and care, not only keep these little heads warm but also add a touch of whimsy to their days spent in the NICU.

Materials:

  • Yarn (4 worsted weight yarn, small amounts, less than an oz in 2 colors)

  • Photos show Lionbrand Pound of Love: “Pumpkin Pie”, “Pumpkin Spice”, and "Mocha"



  • “G” 4.0 mm Crochet Hook

  • Scissors

  • Yarn Needle

  • Measuring Tape





Abbreviations

  • Ch: Chain

  • MC: Magic Circle

  • DC: Double Crochet

  • Inc: 2 Dc in the same st

  • Sl St: Slip Stitch

  • SC: Single Crochet

  • BO: Bobble

  • HDC: Half Double Crochet

  • F/O: Finish Off

  • St: Stitch


Note: Written in US crochet terms, ch 2 does not count as a stitch, skill level is beginner

Preemie (2-5lbs)

1. MC, Ch 2. 10 Dc in Mc. Tighten MC. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (10)


2. Ch 2. Inc around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (20)


3. Ch 2. (Dc, Inc) 10 times. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (30)

  1. Diameter should measure approximately 2.5 inches



4-7. Ch 2. Dc in each st around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (30)

  • For 2-3lbs omit row 7.


8. Ch 1, turn. Sc in the same st as ch 1. Sc in the next st. BO in the next st. (Sc in the next 2 sts, BO) repeat ( ) 9 times. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd. (30)


9. Change to stem color. Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd. (30)



10. Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd. (30).

F/o and leave a long tail to stitch pumpkin stems (about 18 inches).

  • Hat height should measure approximately 3.5-4 inches



  • Take the tail and make a stitch above each bobble to create the stems.

    • f/o weave in end.


Curly Leaf

Attach stem color to the top of the hat in the 1st rnd. Ch 13. Place 3 Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sc 3 in each ch across. Sl st back into the 1st rnd of the hat.


Stem

Ch 6. HDC in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the remaining chs across. Sl st back into the 1st rnd of the hat and f/o. Weave in all ends.




Preemie (5-6 lbs)

1. MC, Ch 2. 8 Dc in Mc. Tighten MC. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (8)


2. Ch 2. Inc around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (16)


3. Ch 2. (Dc, Inc) 8 times. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (24)


4. Ch 2. (Dc in 2, Inc) 8 times. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (32)

  1. Diameter should measure approximately 3.5 inches


5- 8. Ch 2. Dc in each st around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (32)


9. Ch 1, turn. Sc in the same st as ch 1. Sc in the next st. BO in the next st. (Sc in the next 2 sts, BO) repeat ( ) 9 times. Sc, Bo in the last 2 sts. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd. (32)


10. Change to stem color. Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd. (32)


11. Ch 1. Sc in each st around. (32)

  • F/o weave in ends

  • Hat height should measure approximately 4-4.5 inches

Follow above directions for pumpkin stems, curly leaf and stem topper.


Newborn

1. MC, Ch 2. 10 Dc in Mc. Tighten MC. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (10)


2. Ch 2. Inc around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (20)


3. Ch 2. (Dc, Inc) 10 times. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (30)


4. Ch 2. (Dc in 2, Inc) 10 times. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (40)

  • Diameter should measure approximately 4 inches

5- 10. Ch 2. Dc in each st around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd (40)


11. Ch 1, turn. Sc in the same st as ch 1. Sc in the next st. BO in the next st. (Sc in the next 2 sts, BO) repeat ( ) 12 times. Sc, Bo in the last 2 sts. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd. (40)


12. Change to stem color. Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st around. Join w/ a sl st to the 1st st of the rnd. (40)
